Grand Canyon University will now provide benefits to spouses in same-sex marriages.

President Brian Mueller said the Christian university still keeps its religious beliefs on traditional marriage, and will continue those teachings in the curriculum.

Mueller said the change in policy comes after the legalization of same-sex marriage.

“We don’t agree, necessarily, with those marriages, but the court has ruled and we want those people to be a part of our community and we will pay the benefits,” Mueller said.

Mueller hopes this decision will prove to GCU students how to understand those who disagree with their beliefs.

“We want to show to our students, we hope, an example of how people can live together in honest disagreement,” Mueller said.

Mueller said the change comes now because the university renews its benefits package this time of year.
