Phoenix Approves Water Management Deals With Avondale
Phoenix has approved two water management deals with Avondale.
The first deal has Phoenix storing water underneath Avondale. In 2018 it could store up to 1.6 billion gallons.
Cynthia Campbell, water management resources advisor for Phoenix, said the city’s been looking for a place to store its water.
“This is the first year that we have ordered our full allocation from the Colorado River,” she said. “So we actually have extra water to store than we’ve had in previous years.”
Campbell said storing Phoenix’s water will keep Avondale’s underground aquifer healthy.
The second deal has Avondale getting some of its own Colorado River allocation treated in Phoenix, then transported to Avondale’s pipes through a new interconnect.
Avondale has yet to approve the two deals. Cindy Blackmore, Avondale Public Works director, said she expects to put them before the Avondale City Council in the coming months.
